Caboose moves through Northumberland and Sunbury

NORTHUMBERLAND – Residents in Point Township, Northumberland, Upper Augusta Township, Sunbury and Lower Augusta Township saw a large train caboose moving through the area Thursday morning.

The move caused a few traffic delays in Northumberland and Sunbury.

Zartman Construction Co. coordinated the move on the oversized load atop a truck that traveled no more than 25 miles per hour on Route 11, through Northumberland, Sunbury and then south on Route 147.

The move began at 9 a.m. at the Zartman Construction property on Route 11 north of Northumberland. The truck traveled south on Route 11 into Northumberland, across the two river bridges into Sunbury. It then traveled on Shikellamy Avenue to Fourth Street, Fourth Street to Packer Street, Packer Street to Front Street, Front Street to Chestnut Street, Chestnut Street to Second Street, then out Second back to Route 147 south to the property of Jeff Pontius, just south of the city.

Pontius is vice president of operations for North Shore Railroad, headquartered in Northumberland.

Moving crews pushed overhead wires up and out of the way as the 15.5-foot high oversized load crept along.

Motorists were advised to avoid the routes of travel during the morning hours.
