WATSONTOWN — Pennsylvania State Trooper Matt Burrows gave a presentation on the Camp Cadet program to Warrior Run Woman’s Club, affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. The camp is for students from ages 12 through14 who live in Northumberland, Union, Snyder, or Montour counties. Burrows started the program in this area some years ago and has been amazed at how it’s grown. Teamwork, discipline, structure, and self-esteem are emphasized at the week-long camp. Parents are invited to a graduation ceremony on the last day of the program where they see a DVD of the week’s activities. Students may only attend one time, although the trooper said that most would come back if they could.
In order to raise money for the program, Burrows heads two golf tournaments, a 5K run, and a special event at Applebee’s the last week of April, where troopers serve as waiters. All tips go to the Camp Cadet program. Anyone who would like to donate to the program can do so through the organization’s website at svlecc.com. The club gave a donation to Burrows for the camp as well as a donation to the Watsontown Welfare fund which provides Christmas presents to families in need. The club also gave a donation to the Watsontown police welfare fund which helps to provide Christmas for families in need.
Mary Johnson was installed and welcomed into the club at the January meeting. The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the First Lutheran Church in Watsontown. Vicki Egli will give a presentation on herbs.
