TURBOTVILLE — Something about the December tragedy in Newtown, Conn., struck a nerve with 17-year-old Sarah “Tilly” Grow.
“It really opened my eyes,” she said. “You can’t take every day for granted.”
The Warrior Run High School junior decided to channel those emotions into a campaign to raise money for mental health research and to let members of the Sandy Hook community know that they are not forgotten.
Grow is selling bracelets featuring the name of her campaign, “CONNect to cut out violence,” to raise money for the International Mental Health Research Organization. Grow came up with the name one night shortly after the tragedy occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The “CONN” is a nod to Conneticut, while “CONNect to cut” is meant to sound like “Conneticut,” Grow, of Watsontown, said.
“I’m known for coming up with corny sayings,” she said. “I asked my sister, ‘Does this sound OK?’ then I said, ‘What if I put it on a bracelet?’”
Grow ordered 1,000 bracelets and has about 100 left, she said. The bracelets are green and white, the school colors of the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
She hopes to donate at least $1,000 to the International Mental Health Research Organization.
Bracelet buyers also sign a form, which Grow will send to the Sandy Hook school.
“I want to let them know we haven’t forgotten about it,” she said.
However, Grow doesn’t want to stop at 1,000 bracelets.
Grow wants others to take up the campaign and spread the word about “CONNect to cut out violence,” she said.
“I want it to spread across the community,” she said. “I’d love to see it go out to all the public schools in the area.”
Grow is proud of the support from the Warrior Run community.
“I’ve had the great experience of setting this up and getting it started,” she said.
