High school football: Eagles place five on All-Star team

By The Daily Item

Following a hotly-contested 2012 season, Line Mountain placed a combined five players on the 2012 Tri-Valley League All-Star Team, as selected by the league's head coaches.

Line Mountain (7-2), which finished third in the league standings behind Williams Valley (9-0) and Tri-Valley (8-1), had senior wide receiver Jeremy Renn, senior tight end Erik Smeltz and senior tackle Robert Cook selected to the offensive first team. Also for Line Mountain, Austin Snyder was placed on the first team as a kicker.

Behind Renn and Smeltz, the Eagles were second in the TVL in team passing and first downs, plus third in points per game (37.33) behind the aforementioned Vikings and Bulldogs.

Smeltz finished second in the league with 29 receptions for 501 yards and five touchdowns, while Renn was right behind his teammate with 18 catches for 425 yards and six touchdowns.

The first-team quarterback is Williams Valley's Stephen Sedesse. He led the TVL by completing 86 of 153 passes for 1,540 yards and 20 touchdowns.

The first-team tailbacks are Tri-Valley's Blake Bowman and Juniata's Neil Bodley. Bowman led the league with 1,770 yards on 205 carries and was named the TVL's Most Valuable Player. Bodley was second in rushing (159-for-1,496) and he received the Coaches' "Ironman" Award.

Rounding out the offensive first team were Tri-Valley variety back Dalton Miller, Williams Valley center Brett Ruch, plus guards JR Rummel from Williams Valley and Tri-Valley's Lyle Troutman, Juniata tackle Chase Bowsman, Williams Valley tackle Jake Mika and wide receivers Owen Daniel and Brendan Miller both from Williams Valley.

The first-team punter was Pine Grove's Mason Lyons, while Daniel and East Juniata's Brandon Love were selected as kick returners.

Rummel was also named the Offensive Lineman of the Year and Daniel was the Offensive Player of the Year.

Line Mountain's lone first-teamer on defense was senior cornerback Dillan Michael.

For the remaining defensive honorees, a number of players are repeat selections from the offensive side of the ball.

Bowsman was picked again as a lineman, while Rummel and Troutman were chosen as ends, Kaufman and Bowman at linebacker and Daniel as a cornerback. Williams Valley's Beau Yoder was picked as the other defensive tackle while Trevor Whelski was chosen at linebacker for the Vikings. Millersburg linebacker Travis Lamereaux and Halifax cornerback Robert Moretz complete the team. Troutman and Rummel shared Defensive Lineman of the Year honors while Kaufman was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year

Williams Valley, which had a total of eight players take up a combined 11 spots on both the offensive and defensive first teams, had mentor Tim Savage receive Coach of the Year honors for the Vikings.
