HALIFAX —
The ground game was in full effect for Halifax and Upper Dauphin as the teams battled in a 42-34 slugfest in Tri-valley League action on Friday.
Halifax (2-1), led by Joey Kaufman and his 190 yards rushing and three touchdowns, held off a late Upper Dauphin (0-3) surge to preserve the win.
The Wildcats’ combination of Kaufman, Robbie Moretz and Chad Meko found consistent running room throughout the game to keep their offensive unit on the field and move the ball efficiently. The three-headed ground attack combined for 374 yards.
Not to be outdone, the Trojans established a dual-threat passer of their own as Austin A. Weaver threw for one touchdown and ran for two scores. Weaver threw for 170 yards and added 49 yards rushing as both quarterbacks used option reads effectively to find open running lanes.
After an Ian Buffington six-yard touchdown scamper pulled the Trojans to within eight with 1:40 remaining, the Trojans lined up to try to recover an onside kick to keep their hopes alive. A kick to the left side of the left side of the field went out-of-bounds untouched sealing the victory for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats led throughout the game but the Trojans continued to answer every key play the Wildcats could throw their way in an attempt to claw their way back into the game.
