Southern Columbia hands Selinsgrove loss

MONTOURSVILLE — Southern Columbia senir quarterback Taylor Young, helped by a tenacious running  game, was a model of efficiency, completing 8-of-9 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns Friday night as the Tigers turned a close Heartland Athletic Conference crossover game into a 50-21 victory to remain unbeaten at 6-0.

After Selinsgrove (4-2) pulled to within 28-21 on fullback Mike Walter’s second touchdown run, the Seals went for an onside kick and came agonizingly close to recovering it.

But, like horseshoes, close did not count. The ball squirted from underneath a Selinsgrove player and was recovered by Southern’s Tony Chiavaroli at the Tigers’ 45. There were just 28 seconds left, but that was more than enough time for Young.

Young picked up 10 yards on a screen to Feudale, then, taking advantage of a roughing-the-passer the penalty against the Seals, threw a perfect fade, hitting split Bryce Parry in stride for a 31-yard TD. Adding insult to injury, the Seals jumped on the PAT, leading the Tigers to tack on a two-point conversion run by Adam Feudale. The “drive” took just 17 seconds.
