Northumberland County prothonotary won't seek re-election

SUNBURY — After serving as first deputy for 15 years, Northumberland County Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts Kathleen Wolfe-Strausser said Friday that she will not be seeking re-election in the 2013 election.

“During my tenure,” she said, “My office has faced numerous challenges and setbacks at the hands of Salary Board. While other departments within the county had their staffs increase, my staff was constantly cut. Once again, in 2012, I was told I needed to lay off yet another employee. After enduring staff cuts since 2009, we are now reaching a nearly impossible work load.”

Wolfe-Strausser had several notable accomplishments during her years in office.

In 2008, at no cost to taxpayers, she purchased a new computer system, a new court-related computer program, new printers and a scanning system for her offices; in 2012, again at no cost to taxpayers, she bought personal desk scanners for employees to scan records right from their own desks.

Praising her coworkers, Wolfe-Strausser added, “I have always said that the ladies that work in my office are the hardest working, most devoted of any office. They have to be. My office receives and dockets all papers filed to civil cases, criminal cases, juvenile cases, child dependency cases, mental health, and adult abuses.”

Finally, she expressed appreciation for “having had the opportunity to serve Northumberland County for 22 years.”
