Salvation Army thanks 'Needy Family Fund' donors

SUNBURY — It was Christmas in February for Salvation Army citadels in Milton and Sunbury, presented Tuesday with $123,400 raised during the annual Needy Family Fund drive in December.

Maj. Robert Carney from Milton and Maj. Sharon Cupp from Sunbury accepted checks at The Daily Item offices, where they met with the fund drive’s sponsors from the newspaper, Sunbury Broadcasting and Susquehanna Bank.

“We appreciate the work everyone does for us,” Cupp said.

The fund’s proceeds will go to pay Christmas bills for food, toys and other gifts the Salvation Army purchased for families and some nursing homes in the Valley. Some of the funds will come into use later this year to help people in tight financial situations.

“There are some good folks who get just enough money that they don’t qualify for medical cards or other benefits,” Carney said. The Needy Family Fund dollars help them, too. “Their money only goes so far, and there is no government program to help them.”

Carney said he has even paid for a tank of gasoline for someone trying to get to a job interview or for a doctor’s office visit.

“This is one of the best things we’ve ever done for the community,” said JoAnn Shotko, retail executive for Susquehanna Bank, which has been part of the Needy Family Fund since its start 26 years ago.

“The collaboration with everyone is great, and every year, it feels like it gets better,” she said.

Carney smiled and said: “I can’t raise $60,000 on my own. This is a wonderful fund.”
