John Apple Sr. lauded for his public service

SUNBURY — A Sunbury man who has long been active in the community has retired after 34 years on the Sunbury Community Hospital Board of Trustees.

John Apple Sr., 83, retired at the beginning of the year, and numerous individuals said he will be greatly missed.

“Sunbury Community Hospital is honored to have had Mr. Apple as part of our board of trustees and our hospital family for the past 34 years,” hospital CEO Jeff Hunt said. “His experience and leadership have helped move the hospital forward and remain committed to its mission. We will be forever grateful for his support and service to the community and people we serve.”

Fellow hospital board members also spoke out after hearing the news that Apple has retired.

“John Apple is one of the most humble, sincere and kind men that I know,” board Chairman John Carpenter said. “John is also very generous in meeting the needs of both people and charitable entities. He is astute in business, sprinkled with a dry sense of humor. I cherish the blessing of our lifelong friendship.”

Former Sunbury mayor and board member Jesse Woodring echoed his colleagues.

“John Apple has been the consummate community board member from his input, leadership and generosity, as well as his sincere love for his fellow man, this community and this hospital,” he said.

Apple, former vice president of Butter Krust Baking Co., was honored in 2010 for his service on the Salvation Army board. He was presented with the John Booth Award, named after the founder of the Salvation Army.

Apple graduated from Gettysburg College and served in the Army during the Korean War. He was president of the Zion Lutheran Church council and a member of the YMCA board and Pennsylvania Bakers Association. He also served on the board of Susquehanna Savings and Loan.

Apple currently serves on the boards of the Sunbury Area Community Foundation and the John A. Apple Foundation, named after his father.

He served on Susquehanna University’s board as a Lutheran synod representative from 1969 to 1978 and later served on Susquehanna’s board as a regular member from 1997 to 2007, when he was awarded trustee emeritus status. Apple has volunteered with Susquehanna’s regional campaign committee, Leadership Development Committee and business and industry campaign and was a Sigmund Weis School of Business Partner.
