SUNBURY — The Shikellamy School District and East Stroudsburg University announced that six Shikellamy teachers earned National Board Certification in November. The successful teachers include; Jayme Allar, Erin Andretta, Kendra Day, Diane Fasold, Heidi Kremer and Linda Schwartz. Shikellamy now has 15 National Board Certified Teachers. Less than 1,000 of Pennsylvania’s teachers hold this distinction.
National Board Certification is a teacher driven, voluntary process established by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. This certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete and measures what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. As part of the process, teachers create a portfolio that includes student work samples, videotapes and analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, teachers are formally assessed on their knowledge of the subjects they teach.
Earning National Board Certification has been linked to improved outcomes for students. A congressional report, the National Research Council (NRC), confirmed that National Board Certified Teachers advance student achievement and learning, stay in the classroom longer, support new and struggling teachers, and assume other school-based leadership roles.
East Stroudsburg University together with Colonial Intermediate Unit now provide local support for area teachers interested in becoming National Board Certified Teachers.
