SELINSGROVE — Plans for the new Weis Superstore include gasoline pumps and widening Route 522 near the intersection with Broad Street and Route 204.
Construction of the 66,740-square-foot grocery store is scheduled to begin this spring on a nearly 8-acre lot at the corner of Routes 522 and 204, diagonally from the existing Weis store on Broad Street. The new store will be built on the site of the former Ott Packaging.
According to the plans, which will be considered by the Selinsgrove Planning Board at the Feb. 20 public meeting, the Sunbury-based grocer is proposing to sell beer and gasoline at the location and will provide 326 parking spaces for patrons.
Borough Manager Paul Williams said the company is eyeing a late November opening.
Weis will also be required to obtain a highway occupancy permit to add turning lanes on Route 522 northbound onto Broad Street and further north from Route 522 into the new store location as well as a one-lane road from the adjacent Dauntless Hook & Ladder Fire Company.
Though Weis has acknowledged its intention to sell beer at the store, company spokesman Dennis Curtin declined to comment on any other aspect of the plans while working through the approval process.
“It’s difficult to comment on particular aspects of our plan until it is approved,” he said. “With respect to an opening date, it’s not possible to talk with any sort of precision until we are approved and building our store.”
There have been reports of a on-site pre-treatment plant, which Curtin said are not part of the discussion.
Some are criticizing Weis’ decision to sell beer at the new store, including Selinsgrove beer distributor Matt Viens, who owns Keller’s Beer and fears the sale of single bottle, six- and 12-packs of beer at the store will threaten his business.
Weis sells beer at 12 of its stores, including locations in Lewisburg and Sunbury.
