SELINSGROVE – Twenty-five years after Selinsgrove set a world record building a 4.55 mile banana split, resident Chris Schlieder has his sights set on building an even larger desert.
The 38-year-old plans to outdo the 1988 Guinness World Record banana split that contained 2,500 gallons of ice cream, 33,000 bananas and 450 gallons of whipped cream by creating a 5-mile banana split with the help of volunteers on May 4 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The Selinsgrove Borough Council has given approval for the event.
Schlieder, who said he vaguely recalls tasting a bit of the world’s longest ice cream treat years ago, said the goal is to set a new record and raise money for the MDA.
“I had the honor of accompanying a young man to Gretna Glen Summer Camp last year. It inspired me to want to give more local children the opportunity to attend this year,” he said.
The group has set a goal to send at least 100 local children to Gretna Glen Camp at no expense to their families.
