DANVILLE — If the original sweater wasn’t bad enough, Danville school district staff added bows, ribbons and even lights.
They were competing in Friday’s school district-wide staff ugly sweater contest on the last day of school before the holiday vacation. Classes don’t resume until Jan. 3.
This was the second year for the contest in the district. Last year students also wore ugly sweaters, Superintendent Cheryl Latorre said.
Lorie Flatley, a middle school language arts teacher, plugged in her sweater for its full illuminating effect.
Others included first grade teacher Mary Levitski and Jen Weaver, a Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit assistant, who wore a sweater embellished with bows, ribbons and other adornments.
Winners from each school were chosen. They included Dana Earnest and Jen Bunce, who dressed as twins wearing the same sweater. Another staff member wore a full-size stocking.
Winners who will receive prizes included Flatley, Bunce, Earnest, Danielle Bloom, Donna Counterman, Krista Seldomridge, Sherry Cooper, Todd Breach, Jessica Adams, Merry Hackenberg, Matt Bloom, Michelle Becker and Glenna Rearick.
Schools were busy in other ways Friday, with sixth-graders, under the direction of science teacher Richard Smith, making and later eating biomes or large ecosystems of cakes, icing and other sweets.
Four kindergarten classes at the Danville Primary School participated in an elf breakfast. They ate mini foods, including pancakes, and wore elf hats compliments of teachers and parents. Parents also supplied the food.
Students have started making snowflakes to send to students of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the target of a mass shooting Dec. 14.
Danville district staff, students and their families have also collected money to send to the Sandy Hook school.
