MILTON — A variety of clubs and groups are forming at the Milton Public Library this month, all aimed at providing entertainment for a low cost.
On Tuesday, the library hosted a board-game night for adults, Wednesday afternoon featured a photography workshop and tonight is the first meeting of the library’s new LEGO club, said director Sue Williams.
The groups are all free to join and were the result of requests by patrons, Williams said.
“Basically, we try to find programs that interest our users,” she said. “(For example), somebody inquired about a photography workshop in the fall, and so we shopped around until we found someone that could do that.”
The board-game workshop — featuring the games Settlers of Catan, Dominion and Dixit — will meet every other Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the library; the photography workshop will meet every other Wednesday at 3 p.m.; and the LEGO club will meet every Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The workshops also have little to no start-up costs for the library, which allow the organization to provide diverse programming, Williams said.
“We don’t have a budget for it,” she said. “We really count on volunteers. With the board game, it is a volunteer who came in and said ‘I want to do this.’ With the photography workshop, we found someone who is retired and has a strong passion for photography.”
For the LEGO club, the library asked for donations of old LEGO playsets and is starting the group now that enough have been received to get under way, Williams said.
“We got a good enough supply to get started,” she said. “We also got some books that are LEGO-themed to do a story time for the younger kids.”
Without the support of the community, the group may not have happened, Williams said.
“Asking for donations and getting the response that we did really allowed that program to happen,” she said.
The library also is starting a quilting club and a mommy-and-me class later this month, also lead by volunteers, Williams said.
“The leader (of mommy-and-me) was previously an educator, and she misses that element in her life,” she said.
Anyone interested in starting a group can talk with Williams about their ideas, she said.
