DANVILLE — About 50 dancers from the Karen Gronsky School of Dance will perform during the Harlem Globetrotters’ pre-game show Saturday in Philadelphia.
The pre-show, scheduled for the Wells Fargo Center, is expected to last seven minutes, according to studio owner Gronsky. The show is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
They got the invite following their performance at a Philadelphia 76ers’ game two years ago in Philadelphia. “They saw us and called us,” she said.
“This will be our first Harlem Globetrotters show,” she said.
The dancers heading to Philadelphia will include performers as young as 4 to adults who are alumni dancers of the Danville studio.
“They will be doing a mix of lyrical to hip-hop,” she said. The dancers will include boys and young men.
They have rehearsed at least twice per week for the past 11 weeks plus dancing school.
Three buses are expected to make the trip carrying parents as well as friends. “We sold well over 250 tickets,” Gronsky said. They are paying for their own transportation.
“We have people driving down themselves and friends in Philly who will be meeting us there. They gave us three boxes for the show,” she said.
They held a dress rehearsal March 2. “They are going to be divas with sparkly tutus,” she said. As for the guys, they will don specially made basketball jerseys.
Are they pumped?
“Oh my goodness, the whole dancing school is excited. It’s a really big deal for them, especially the little ones and for the older ones too,” she said.
The Globetrotters will record Saturday’s show and provide Gronsky with a copy, she said.
“It will be an unbelievable experience dancing in front of thousands of people,” she said. Gronsky rented an athletic training facility in Danville so they could get the feel of performing on a basketball court.
As for the 76ers, the Gronsky dancers have been asked back for a repeat performance. “We are already setting a date for 2014,” she said.
