DANVILLE — The Danville High School forensics team garnered 117 points to win the Pennsylvania High School Speech League District 9 Championship at the competition held at Midd-West High School in Middleburg recently. As well as continuing the district sweepstakes tradition — Danville has been the champion for 17 of the last 18 years — 15 students will represent the school at the PA High School Speech League state championships to be held March 22-23 at Susquehanna University. These students placed in the top three of their respective events to qualify to states:
In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Meaghan McDonald took first place and Barron Williams, second. The three-person team finishing second in Parliamentary debate was Kat Baum, Monica Burke, and Hannah Anderson. First and second places in Congressional Senate debate were won by Talha Mukhtar and Alec Leiby.
In Speech events, David Crone placed first in Commentary; Steven Zhang and Megan Moro were first and second in Extemporaneous Speech.
Interpretive competitors Jenna Cole and Christina Perez were second place winners in Duo Interpretation, Chris Morgan took second in Humorous Interpretation, Jess Yoder was third in Dramatic Interpretation, and Taylor Mahaffy finished second in Poetry Interpretation.
Additionally, four students will serve as alternates to the state tournament in their respective events: Ben Fait and Ryan Conrad in Public Forum debate, Andy Nguyen in Persuasive speech, and Avani Chopra in Poetry Interpretation.
The Pennsylvania High School Speech League was founded in 1961, and membership comprises more than 150 schools divided into fourteen districts. Its overall purpose is to stimulate through educational competition an understanding and appreciation of all areas of speech. Danville High School is also a member of the Catholic Forensics League and the National Forensics League. Students will be competing in early March at national qualifying tournaments in these two leagues.
