Milton YMCA graduates 10 new Red Cross Lifeguards

MILTON — Ten local high school students participated in an American Red Cross Lifeguards training course at the Milton YMCA. The course, held over three weekends with Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions, was directed by YMCA aquatics specialist Lynn Rees.

Through the use of group instruction supplemented with video, hands-on skills practice, and in water drills; students learned patron surveillance techniques, injury prevention strategies, rescue skills, first aid, CPR with AED, and Teamwork. Lynn Rees, who also manages the Milton Community Pool, also emphasized the importance of professionalism. Kurt Eck, a YMCA staff member who helped with the training, explained further to the teens that “This is an awesome responsibility that you are taking on. You are all still teenagers and you are going to be entrusted to protect peoples lives.”

Student Sydney McGlaughlin said about the course, “(It) was harder than I expected, but I learned a lot and it got easier after a while. I’m glad I took the course because now I have a lot of good skills for this job and for the future.”

Participants plan on working at local community pools this summer.
