TURBOTVILLE — Warrior Run School District is hosting a Let’s Learn About Literacy Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 23, in the cafeteria at the Turbotville Elementary School. Kindergarten teachers from the district will present a presentation on phonemic awareness. Parents of incoming 2013-2014 Warrior Run kindergarten students and their kindergarten child are invited to attend. Children will receive a free book and game to play with their parents.
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds in spoken words. Before children learn to read print, they must be made aware of how the sounds in words work. They must understand that each letter makes a sound and words are made of sounds. Phonemic awareness is important for reading comprehension and decoding.
Additional information is available by calling Mary at 649-5164.
