Christopher Wolfe takes seat on Northumberland Borough Council

— NORTHUMBERLAND — Borough officials swore in a new councilman Tuesday night, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Jonathan Rees.

Christopher Wolfe, 37, will serve on the council for a year, the remainder of Rees’ term.

In accepting the position, Wolfe, who recently spent 11 years working in Ohio, said he had bought a home in Northumberland, wanting to return to the area where much of his family lived.

The council noted that Wolfe has expertise in construction, infrastructure and wastewater issues.

“I applied for this position because I wanted to preserve what’s best in our clean community,” he said.

After he was seated on the council, new committee members were named as follows: Greg Carl, Stephen Reed and Frank Wetzel, community development; Ty Sees, James Troup and Carl, finance; Wolfe, Wetzel and Sees, rules:  Troup, Adam Klock and Sees, personnel; Wetzel, Klock and Reed, public safety; Reed, Carl and Wolfe, streets; and Klock, Troup and Wolfe, sewer.

Klock, the newly appointed chairman of the borough’s sewer committee, announced that Sewer Superintendent Dan Wiand had turned in a letter of resignation.

The borough will initiate a search for a superintendent, Klock said, “And we’ll begin by advertising in various trade publications,” he added.

Later, Steve Siegfriend, a representative from Hazen and Sawyer, the State College-based engineering firm that is managing the $11.9 million sewage treatment plant project, reported that the project is progressing on schedule and budget.

The next milestone is late February, when a “categorical exemption” application must be filed with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection. That document is available for public perusal — and comment — for 30 days. Replies to comments will be part of the record turned into DEP on Feb. 28.
