SELINSGROVE — The Snyder County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) recently renewed its charter. The group met for a luncheon meeting at Denny’s in Selinsgrove. John Smith, Region 5 PASR director, presented the renewal. The members shared their memories from 1964. Several members were just beginning their careers, while others were still in grade school at that time.
The Snyder County Chapter of PASR was organized on Oct. 14, 1964, with 10 members. They applied for their charter on Dec. 28, 1964, and the charter was approved on Jan. 7, 1965. Arthur Felker was the first chapter president.
The Snyder County Chapter currently has 104 members. Nine of the members are 90 years or older. The oldest member, Miriam Leitzel, is 97 years old. The current president is Elsie Straub. The group is comprised of teachers, custodians, cooks, aides, and principals from Midd-West School and Selinsgrove Area School Districts, plus other school retirees who have moved into the area. The group meets the third Monday of the month at local restaurants either for breakfast or lunch meetings. For more information contact Elsie Straub at 286-1272.
The PASR celebrated the association’s 75th anniversary this year. PASR was formed by six retired educators from Southeast PA on Dec. 28, 1937. The Snyder County Chapter became the 26th chapter in the association. The mission of PASR is “to serve others in need and help one another enjoy retirement.”
