LEWISBURG — As part of the celebration of Union County’s 1813-2013 Bicentennial, the Union County Historical Society is offering a public presentation at Marlow Hall, RiverWoods, Lewisburg, starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10. The event is free and open to the public. The talk will be at the Albright Care complex near Slifer House, off River Road north of Lewisburg and across from the Evangelical Hospital on Route 15. After parking, enter the main canopied entrance at RiverWoods and Marlow Hall is down the hallway from the reception desk.
Nancy Neuman, Marj Kastner, and Pat Longley will give the program “Early Buffalo Valley” that presents the founding of Union County with a focus on its early families. The program will include documents — wills, deeds, maps — that illustrate how people lived in the first years of Union County. It will bring to life the earliest era of the European settlement of the area.
In researching the genealogy of their families, both Nancy Neuman and Pat Longley recently discovered their own ancestors living in the area before 1813. Margaret Kastner is a volunteer at the Union County Historical Society and the Lewisburg Cemetery. She has been researching family history for the past 15 years.
The presenters will, along with the audience, look at the Scots Irish settlement in White Deer Township (now Kelly Township), German settlers in East Buffalo and Buffalo townships, and the earliest residents of Lewisburg. Descendants of early families are encouraged to attend and share their knowledge of historic Union County.
This public program is the third in over 60 events being offered during Union County’s Bicentennial year. For more information on these events go to the Union County Bicentennial Committee’s web site: www.UnionCounty200.com.
