MIDDLEBURG — 4-H isn’t just for farm kids. Any youth can join a club and become involved in the local, district and state activities the program has to offer. 4-H is open to all boys and girls ages 8-18. A Cloverbud program is also available in some clubs for youth 5-7 years of age.
4-H offers something for nearly everyone. There are traditional clubs that offer projects such as sewing, cooking, and crafting, as well as animal projects in beef, dairy, horse, sheep, swine, goats, and rabbits. There are also projects in rocketry, woodworking, shooting sports, and even robotics.
According to Kathy Weller, 4-H coordinator for Snyder County, “The robotics project is a new area for the county program. The members enjoyed this project for the first time last year participating in Junkdrawer Robotics. The youth learned about the working parts of a robot and created a functioning catapult using elements from the project book. This year they will be working on programming robotic kits to complete tasks.
Snyder County is home to four clubs offering horse projects, seven clubs offering animal science projects, and five clubs offering projects including shooting sports, cake decorating, scrapbooking, stamp art, jewelry making, cooking, and more. Kathy says, “Our newest additions include a sewing club in the Freeburg area, and a multi species animal club in the Mount Pleasant Mills area”. Members can participate in as many projects as they want for an annual materials fee of $10.
Clubs are accepting new members now. If you are interested in the 4-H program, check out the webpage: http://extension.psu.edu/snyder/programs/4-h for information on the clubs, and the enrollment form.
