MIFFLINBURG — Over a hundred adults and children gathered as Mifflinburg welcomed the holidays with its third annual Community Tree Lighting and second annual Business Open House and Business Storefront Decorating Contest.
Although chilly, the cookies provided by the Mifflinburg First Church of the Nazarene (served up by volunteers from the Herr Memorial Library) and the coffee and hot cocoa donated by DC Coffee kept everyone warm and toasty while they listened to music by KJ Reimensnyder-Wagner and waited for Santa’s arrival to assist with the official lighting of the tree. Mayor David Cooney emceed the event and welcomed Santa to the festivities. Together, they flipped the switch lighting up the 14 foot balsam fir donated and decorated by Country Farm and Home.
During the afternoon and evening, many downtown businesses were open supplying their own taste of the holidays with refreshments, specials and discounts to early holiday shoppers. MHRA also sponsored its second business storefront decorating contest and the businesses outdid themselves this year with everything from a running train display to a six foot Belsnickle to a myriad of lights and window effects. The Community Tree lighting attendees were provided ballots to vote for the People’s Choice Award and a separate judging was also occurring for the Judge’s Award. This year’s People’s Choice Award (which was a very close vote this year) went to Raspberry Creative while the Judge’s Award went to Barb’s Bouquet & Gift Basket.
