Lewisburg's Victorian parade steps off at 1 p.m. Saturday

LEWISBURG — Here’s hoping the rain holds off: Lewisburg’s annual Victorian Holiday Parade is set to take place at 1 p.m. Saturday should the forecast, calling for showers, cooperate.

Linda Sterling, director of the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership, said a “game day” call will be made by 8 a.m. Saturday about whether to go ahead with the parade.

“If it rains, the parade must be canceled because there are too many vintage items from carriages to costumes that would be damaged,” she said.

As of deadline Thursday, AccuWeather, of State College, was forecasting lingering rain from today into Saturday, albeit with milder temperatures in the 50s, according to Senior Meteorologist Frank Strait.

The parade is a procession of horse-drawn vehicles, period-costumed folks and characters and music and dance, but none of that holds up well in harsh weather, Sterling said.

There is no rain date for the parade, but people shouldn’t let that keep them away from Lewisburg. “This whole weekend is about tradition,” she said.

The borough’s holiday traditions began Thursday night with the tree lighting in Hufnagle Park. And tonight brings late-night shoppers to the downtown. All stores will be open late, most until midnight, to help busy folks get their Christmas purchases as well as support small businesses. Refreshments, special events and holiday discounts will be found all about the town.

Other events Saturday that aren’t weather dependent will still happen.

The Packwood House Museum will open its doors at 10 a.m. for a “tag sale” of Christmas merchandise in the museum’s tour center at 15 N. Water St. There also will be a used book sale and a bake sale.

At 2 p.m., the Campus Theatre will present a free showing of “A Christmas Story,” presented by Coldwell Banker-Penn One. Attendees are asked to take a donation of canned food or used eyeglasses for distribution.

From 2 to 5 p.m., Faustina Gallery, 229 Market St., will kick off the ninth annual Art for the Holidays exhibit and sale, offering original works by regional artists as well as hot chocolate and cookies.
