PORT TREVORTON — Joel Bergerstock, a sophomore at Selinsgrove Area High School, will host a chicken pot pie dinner for the public from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at Hope United Methodist Church in Port Trevorton.
The dinner features all homemade ingredients including pot pie, fresh rolls and two choices of sides at $7 per adult and $5 for kids 12 years old and under. Proceeds from the dinner benefit Joel in his pursuit of attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in February. This program is a unique and selective career development program which teaches outstanding students about American diplomacy, intelligence and defense.
Nominated because of his exemplary academic performance, Joel received the news that he was accepted into the program in August. Since then, he has hosted a spaghetti dinner and breakfast cafes. Joel has been successful in raising 1/3 of the money he needs to attend the program. With only three months away and $1,000 to be raised, Joel plans to host more fundraisers in the near future in order to make it to Washington, D.C. where he will learn how to utilize critical thinking, leadership and public speaking skills in order to tackle the complexity of national decision-making as they examine how the U.S. plans for peace and prepares for crisis.
Joel is active in many activities in the area. Including being a member of the Middleburg Boy Scout Troop 415 where he is currently a Star Scout and holding the position of senior patrol leader. He volunteers as a coach with the Upward Basketball Program at Hope United Methodist Church, and is active with the youth group at Faith Baptist Church in Beaver Springs.
