HARRISBURG — The Country Twirlers earned blue ribbons at the Farm Show on Monday night.
If you ask anybody in the Country Twirlers what they like most about dancing, the answer might be “Load the Boat”, “Spin the Top”, “California Twirl”, “Pass the Ocean”, “Flutterwheel” “Slip the Clutch” or “Zoom”, but the answer will probably always be “the people”. This is a friendly group dedicated to having a good time and not being too serious.
The club was started by Glenn Stuck in 1980. Previously, he had danced in the mid 60s at the Nittany Mountain Campsite. Then around 1976, he started going to dances again. He decide to go to Caller Lab school to become a caller in 1979, the main reason being to overcome his shyness. Glenn met his wife Tina at a square dance. Both his daughters grew up learning to dance. In fact, his daughter Katie, a senior at Messiah College just taught members of the girls’ track team to dance for the Farm Show competition. These girls were a highlight on Monday night and attracted the attention of the local media.
The Country Twirlers perform at local events, nursing homes, etc. They also travel all over the country to conventions. Last year, some members traveled to Spokane, Wash. for the national convention. This August they are headed to England to dance.
In addition to the square dancing, there are line dances, round dances and once in awhile a good old dance like “The Virginia Reel”.
The Country Twirlers are inviting any interested persons to join the group to learn western square dancing and line dancing. Classes are starting for beginners at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at the recreation center at The Selinsgrove Center. The next set of classes won’t start until September. Additional information is available by contacting Glenn Stuck at 374-2722.
