ALLENTOWN -- Nevin C.T. Shaffer, DDS, 91, of Allentown, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

He was born March 22, 1918, in Sunbury, a son of the late Adam and Matilda (Brown) Shaffer. He was married for 65 years to the former Sara Jane Wormley, who survives.

Nevin was a first lieutenant in the Army during World War II and was wounded by a gunshot in the chest during combat in Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service.

He was a pre-dental graduate of Susquehanna University and was a 1951 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Dental School.

Nevin started his private dental practice in Allentown in 1951 and worked there until retiring in 1990.

He was an active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Allentown, and was a former lector and usher for 50 years. He served as president of the Lehigh Valley Dental Society and the Second District Dental Society. He received the Dr. Francis Trembly Award for outstanding service to oral health in the community. He was a member of Brookside Country Club, Macungie, and the Allentown Kiwanis Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by nephews, Nevin and Carl Lontz, Darwin Wagner, Mrs. Joan Fasold and Cameron Shaffer, and nieces, Beverly Steuer and Mary A. Snyder.

Services were held in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Allentown, and interment was in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.

Arrangements were by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
