NORTHUMBERLAND — Lester E. Shaffer, 92, of Northumberland, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
He was born April 27, 1920, in Mount Pleasant Mills, a son of the late Thomas A. and Mable M. (Phillips) Shaffer.
Lester was a graduate of Selinsgrove High School.
He was employed for many years by Miller’s Auto Supply in Sunbury and a year in Shamokin before retiring.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sunbury.
Lester enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and spending time with his friends at the Sunbury Senior Center. He enjoyed routing for all Philadelphia professional teams.
He is survived by four children and their spouses, Herbert T. and Charlotte Shaffer, of Middleburg, Kay E. Casner, of Danville, Merrill R. and Debbie Shaffer, of Mifflintown, and Linda and Denny DiOrio, of Danville; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria E. Fisher and his second wife, Esther M. Klock; one brother, Herman; and one sister, Alma Shetterly.
Friends will be received from 10 to 10:55 a.m. Monday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with his grandson, the Rev. Herbert T. Shaffer II of First Wesleyan Church, Roanoke, Va., officiating.
Interment will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lester’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
