Deborah J. Lusby, 54, Sunbury

SUNBURY — Deborah Jean (Edmonds) Lusby, 54, of Sunbury, passed away on Sunday morning, Dec. 9, 2012, at home surrounded by her family.

She was born Oct. 7, 1958, in Kendallville, Ind., a daughter of Jack and Betty Edmonds.

Growing up in Indiana, she was an outstanding athlete at East Noble High School and later at Anderson College from where she graduated in 1981. Throughout her adult life she continued to be active with cycling, hiking, kayaking and running. Deb competed in a number of marathons over the years as well as numerous shorter races.

It was at Anderson that she met Dean Lusby to whom she was married on Dec. 20, 1980. Together they had two boys, Jeremiah and David Tyler. Deb and Dean moved to the Central Susquehanna Valley in 1984 and have enjoyed the beautiful hills and valleys of the area since. She was a wonderful wife and mother.

Deb was employed at UPS since 1989 where she was well-liked by her coworkers. She was a very creative person, writing for some local publications and papers, doing wedding photography, quilting and other needlework.

She was an amazing cook and an avid gardener, going through the Penn State Master Gardener program. Deb was a part of the group which began the Elijah’s Bowl soup kitchen at First Presbyterian. She became active with Lower Augusta Fire Company, took emergency medical training and became an EMT working for Americus and a number of other local ambulance companies. Deb loved helping people and enjoyed her EMT work greatly. Her and her husband also were active with a local search and rescue team. Her and Dean enjoyed nice afternoons motorcycling through the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside with friends.

Deb’s strong faith in Jesus sustained and supported her in her long struggle with lymphoma. Deb and Dean called Mountain Presbyterian Church home, often walking the mile and three quarters to church on Sunday mornings. She was baptized in Bixler lake in her hometown in her teens and Deb and Dean have been active in a number of churches over the years.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Jeremiah and Marlenah Lusby, of Douglassville and David Tyler Lusby, of Ashburn, Va.; three brothers, John, David and James Edmonds and sisters-in-law, Sharon, Kathy and Brenda Edmonds, all of Wawaka, Ind.; in-laws, Charles and Louise Lusby, of Chambersburg; siblings-in-laws, Doug and Kam Lusby, of Indianapolis, Ind., Russ Lusby and Stephen and Michelle Lusby, all of Baltimore; numerous nieces and nephews in Indiana and Baltimore; and Deb also leaves behind her beloved Toodie who was her search and rescue dog, as well as other dogs, cats and chickens who all had names.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Mountain Presbyterian Church, 2478 Boyles Run Road, Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11. A simple meal will be provided at the church following the funeral service.

Deb will be buried in the coming days in the family plot in Indiana.

Arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
