MIDDLEBURG — Donald R. “Red” Zechman Sr., 80, of Dinius Avenue, passed away on Monday evening, Feb. 11, 2013, at Sunbury Community Hospital.
He was born Nov. 7, 1932, in Beavertown, a son of the late Glenn and Emma (Zechman) Walter. On Nov. 23, 1957, he married the former Edna A. Moyer, who survives.
Red was a 1950 graduate of Middleburg High School and served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
His employment history included Philco, the Selinsgrove Center, Hotel Middleburger, Guy Trimpey Construction and Faylor-Middlecreek Construction, and he retired in 1994 as a grade foreman from Hempt Bros. after many years of service.
He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mount Pleasant Mills, where he had served as council president. He was a member of Middleburg Masonic Lodge 619, the Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Shrine, where he served as an usher, a life member of the Reliance Hose Company, Middleburg, where he had served as president and was a life member of the Kreamer Sportsmen’s Club. He was a member of Middleburg Moose Lodge 1229, where he served as governor in 1984 and received his Pilgrim degree in 1999, a life member of the Susquehanna Moose Legion 89, where he served as president in 1995, and a member of Heiser-Hoffman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5640, where he was commander at the time of his passing, and American Legion Post 52, both of Middleburg. He was serving on the Middleburg Municipal Authority board, where he was chairman for many years, served on the Middleburg school board, served on various American Red Cross committees and as a volunteer, was a member of the Snyder County Republican Committee and had served as treasurer of the Air Force 5th Communication Group Reunion.
Donald enjoyed hunting, traveling and fishing as well as sports. He enjoyed his daily meeting for coffee with his friends at Harvey’s.
Red’s greatest joy was his grandchildren.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 55 years, are one son and daughter-in-law, Donald R. Jr. and Barb Zechman, of Middleburg; three grandchildren, Dustin and his wife, Katie Zechman, and Stephanie and Ashley Zechman; one great-granddaughter, Payton; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Faith Walter, of Middleburg; and one nephew, Michael Walter.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, where a Moose Pilgrim service will be conducted at 8:30 followed by a Masonic memorial service. A viewing also will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 9597 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Andrew Weaver officiating.
Burial with military honors by the Middle West Veterans Organization will be in Glendale Cemetery, Middleburg.
