LEWISBURG — John Gerard “Jerry” Coughlin, 78, a native of Massachusetts and longtime resident of Southern California before moving to Pennsylvania in 1999, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at his home in Lewisburg.
He was born May 14, 1934, in Boston, Mass., son of the late Francis Coughlin and Ethel (Farrell) Coughlin. In a radiant, glad-hearted ceremony on Feb. 22, 1985, in Hartford, Conn., confirmed bachelor JG married Johanna Meta Sayre, who survives.
Also lovingly remembering Jerry are his daughter, Jessica Cohen and her husband, Ronald, of Mifflinburg, his granddaughter, Sayre Cohen, of Mifflinburg, his sister, Pat Boone, of Woburn, Mass., many special nieces and nephews, cherished extended family and friends all over the country and his beloved cat companion, Girlie.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Fran and Dick.
Jerry served in the Army, enjoyed a lifelong career in the financial services arena and was one of the most research-oriented, well-read persons one could engage in conversation. He is best characterized as a true gentleman, a sweet man with a lovely soul. His granddaughter describes him perfectly: “kind, lively and caring.”
His family will be celebrating JG’s life privately. They thank you for holding him in your thoughts and offering prayers and good intentions for his next great experience. They know he would delight in your honoring him by performing random acts of kindheartedness, offering smiles to strangers and tipping liberally. These gestures would pay tribute to his characteristic generosity of spirit and affirm, as he did countless times, that “This is the perfect taco.”
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jerry’s memory may be sent to Mercy Corps, P.O. Box 2669, Dept. W, Portland, OR 97208-2669, to assist with Haitian relief, or to a charity near and dear to your heart.

The family is assisted by the Dominick T. Adamo Funeral Home, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, and thanks them for their thoughtful and comprehensive service.
