SUNBURY — John Rife Schaeffer Sr., 76, of Sunbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, due to illnesses compounded by lung disease.
He was born May 2, 1936, in Montoursville, a son of the late Paul R. Sr. and Elsie Bennett Schaeffer Mix. He was married to the former Patricia Ann Sholley for 44 years before her death in 1999.
John attended Williamsport area schools.
He formerly was employed as a crane operator at Kellogg Construction, Rayovac, Kennedy Van Saun as an overhead crane operator and delivering mobile homes for Dallas Moser Transport. He retired from Paulsen Wire Rope to care for his beloved wife, Gab.
John was a lifelong member of the Sunbury Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1.
“Pop,” as he was kindly called by all who knew him, was fond of the saying, “He wished his brains were as big as his heart.” He had the biggest heart of any man you’ve ever met, and nothing was more important to him than his family.
Pop was an avid motorcycle and automobile mechanic. If he couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed. He enjoyed all phases of hunting, but his most favorite was antlered deer season. Pop was most comfortable when surrounded by his family and friends.
John is survived by six children and their spouses, John Schaeffer Jr., Leonard Schaeffer, Kimberly (Schaeffer) and Robert “Dink” Rager, Rodney Schaeffer, Scott and Melanie (Beard) Schaeffer and Angela Davidson, all of Sunbury; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother in-law, Joyce and Bernard Miller and Beverly Stever; one brother, Paul R. Schaeffer Jr.; and many nieces, nephews and others who considered John their “Pop.”
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lana Elaine; one brother, Harry William Pepperman; and a son, Timothy Schaeffer.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with Pastor Calvin Miller officiating.
Interment will be in Turbotville Cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Scott Schaeffer, 1435 Mile Post Road, Sunbury, PA 17801, to help defray funeral costs.
