ACTON, Mass. — Charles H.R. Bull, 70, of Acton, a former Sunbury, Pa., resident, died peacefully on Tuesday Jan. 1, 2013, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.
He was born in Southampton, N.Y., a son of the late Earl and Katherine (Warde) Bull. He was the beloved husband of Carol (Bachman) Bull, to whom he was married for 42 years.
A member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Descendents of the Founders of Hartford, Charles grew up in Long Island and lived in West Haven, Conn., for 22 years.
He was employed by Southern New England Telephone until his retirement. Throughout his life, he loved and collected music, and he especially enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Following his retirement, this passion led him to move with his wife to Sunbury, where he graduated from Susquehanna University with a degree in organ performance and sacred music. Charles greatly enjoyed his second career with a position at First Reformed United Church of Christ in Sunbury and as a guest organist at area churches in Pennsylvania and later in Massachusetts.
A member of the American Guild of Organists, he was a former member of St. Bartholomew’s Choir in New York City, the Susquehanna Valley Chorale and the Sounds of Stow. A longtime member of the Masons, he enjoyed gardening, golfing and travel. He loved his dogs and is fondly remembered for time spent with his family, teaching his grandson to fish, playing games with his granddaughter, grandpa’s annual egg hunt and his “sweet tooth.”
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Charles Rutstein, and their children, Jacob and Claire, all of Concord, Mass.; one brother, John Bull; and two nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Bull.
Relatives and friends are invited for a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave., Acton. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 472 Massachusetts Ave., Acton. Interment will be private in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Epilepsy Foundation, Attn. Donor Services Dept., P.O. Box 96546, Washington, DC 20077-7222, or to the Charles H.R. and Carol B. Bull Organ scholarship fund, Susquehanna University, 514 University Ave., Selinsgrove, PA 17870, Attn. Ron Cohen.
