COAL TOWNSHIP — Shirley Lorraine (Dorsett) Ramer, 74, of 1500 W. Chestnut St., passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
She was born June 11, 1938, in Shamokin, a daughter of the late Bertha (Alleman) and James Dorsett. On Aug. 29, 1954, she married Leon Ramer Sr., who preceded her in death on April 2, 1997.
Shirley was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The candy jars in her home were always full, and she never let visitors leave empty-handed, usually sending them home with treats she had stashed away in her kitchen. She was a talented cook and the best babysitter her grandchildren ever had. On lazy summer days, she’d watch over them as they played kickball and energetically ran around in the neighborhood.
Shirley could often be seen shooting the breeze on the porch of her home with her neighbors and family. She seemingly knew everyone in the neighborhood just by their vehicles. Whenever a car would pass, she would say, “Oh, there goes so-and-so” and the drivers would wave and honk their horns.
Soap operas and professional wrestling were her guilty pleasures. She was feisty and funny and she always spoke her mind.
She is survived by six children and their spouses, Brenda and Mark Walburn, of Coal Township, Mary Douglas, of Wynnewood, Sandy and Burd Wentzel, of Ashland, Leon Jr. and Carol Ramer, of Pitman. Joe Ramer, of Wilburton, and Lynn and Bobby Nolter, of Coal Township; 13 grandchildren: four great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Dorsett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, David and Lester; seven sisters, Anna, Jean, Kathleen, Dorothy, Grace, Gertrude and Betty; and three children, twin daughters and one son.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, followed by the funeral at 11, at Farrow Funeral Home, 240 W. chestnut St., Shamokin, with Major Ruth Pryce presiding.
Burial will be in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery Hunters Station.
