WATSONTOWN — Edward M. “Ed” Benfer, 81, of Main Street, was called into the arms of his Lord and Saviour surrounded by his loving family and pastor on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born March 27, 1931, in Milton, a son of the late Francis E. and Helen E. (Yeager) Benfer. He was married to the former Anna M. Berge on April 28, 1952, and they celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Ed served in the Army during the Korean War and was a life member of the Watsontown American Legion.
He was a carpenter and member of the Carpenter’s Union in Williamsport, retiring in 1983. Earlier in life, he had worked at Philco-Ford and William Wagner Construction, both of Watsontown.
Ed was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Watsontown, for 51 years.
Ed enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family. He was a devoted family man and loved times with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward M. “Pep” Benfer II and his companion, Debora Yocum, and her son, Damon, and Thomas D. Benfer, all of Turbotville; one daughter, Lori J. Betz and her companion, Bill Weber, of Milton; two grandchildren, Justin Betz and Melissa Moser; five great-grandchildren, Kailey, Gannon, and Lacey Betz and Logan and Landon Moser; two brothers, Frederick Benfer, of White Deer, and Samuel Benfer, of Mazeppa; two sisters, Linda Danowsky, of Montandon, and Sally Jordan, of Orlando, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his favorite puppy dogs, Brock and Mindy.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane Mahoney and Nancy Barnwell, and one brother, Clarence Benfer.
Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main St., Watsontown, and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, 400 Main St., Watsontown, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 with his pastor, the Rev. James H. Fladland, officiating.
Burial will follow in Watsontown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to his church or the Acute Cardiac Unit at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
The family wants to thank all of the staff members of the Advance Medical Unit on the seventh floor at Geisinger Medical Center for their compassionate and professional care of Ed.
