Donald E. Mack, 67, Selinsgrove

SELINSGROVE — Donald E. Mack, 67, of Old Homestead Road, passed away at home on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 26, 1945, in Allentown, to Pauline M. (Gower) Snyder, of Winfield, and the late Vernon S. Mack. On Aug. 14, 1971, he married the former Ellen L. Hummel, who survives.

Don attended Lewisburg High School, and he enlisted in the Navy in 1963. He received his training at the Great Lakes, Ill., Training Center, after which he was assigned to the USS Howard W. Gilmore AS-16, a submarine tender.

Following his discharge from military service in 1966, Don worked as a mechanic and construction worker. Later, as a truck driver, he worked for various companies until he formed his own business and was self-employed as an owner-operator of Mack Trucking. Whether he was hauling general freight, wide loads, furniture or potatoes, Don enjoyed being “on the road,” especially since it afforded him the opportunity to experience many historical and scenic sites of our beautiful country. When he was at home, Don’s favorite pastimes were to hang out at his son’s shop supervising and to meet “the guys” for coffee or breakfast. Many hours were spent and many cups of coffee were consumed while catching up with friends.

Don was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church, Selinsgrove.

He had been a charter member of the SUN Corvette Club and Susquehanna Valley C.A.R.T.S. Don loved cars, especially classic 1960s and 1970s Pontiacs. In his younger days, he spent weekends racing at the Kreamer and Beaver Springs drag strips. He also participated in many car shows and enjoyed the camaraderie of the other car enthusiasts. Don was an avid collector of automotive memorabilia.

In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ryan B. and Michelle L. Mack; two grandchildren, Evan Pickering and Braydon Mack, of Selinsgrove; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Brenda and Ken Hering, of New Columbia, and Debra Smith, of Winfield; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Sandra and Richard Deppen and Linn and Craig Zimmerman, all of Selinsgrove; and his mother-in-law, Emma Hummel, of Selinsgrove.

Don was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Mack; his father, Vernon S. Mack; his stepfather, Rudolph Snyder; one brother, Vernon F. Mack; and his father-in-law, Leon R. Hummel.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3939 Park Road, Selinsgrove, with the Rev. Randall Bennett Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Shreiner’s Cemetery, 11th Avenue, Selinsgrove.

Contributions in Don’s memory may be made to Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3939 Park Road, Selinsgrove, PA 17870, to the American Cancer Society, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
