SUNBURY — Robert Lee “Pete” Reed, 96, of Sunbury, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012.
He was born Oct. 24, 1916, in Sunbury, a son of the late Edgar Lee and Frances Ruth (Wetzel) Reed. Pete married the former Lois Grace Tweed on Dec. 31, 1939 and they had one son. They were married for 61 years.
Pete’s earlier years were filled with music as, for many years, he played clarinet with the American Legion Post 201 Band, the Sunbury City Band and other band groups.
After serving in the Army during World War II for which he earned two Purple Hearts, he was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service.
He was a member of the Free & Accepted Masons, the Sunbury Social Club, and other social groups in the area.
Pete was a devoted husband, father and Papa, who was extremely proud of his granddaughters. Throughout his many years, Pete was faithful in his service to the Lord and to others. He was a gracious and loved man who will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his son, Barry Reed, of Crossville, Tenn.; three brothers, Ben Reed, of Elizabethtown, Tom Reed, of Lancaster, and George Reed, of Harrisburg; two granddaughters, Deborah and Tracy; and one great-grandson, Kess.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; three brothers, James Albert, William Wetzel, and John Edward; and five sisters, Elsie Pauline “Sis” Bubb, June Isabelle Frits, Frances Marie “Doll” Gruber, Faye Elaine Mahoney, and Lois Anne Michaels.
Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Thomas Dunkle of the First Reformed Church United Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam. A military service will follow at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Pete’s memory be made to First Reformed Church UCC, Sunbury, PA 17801.
