LEWISBURG — Vera Z. Smith, 87, entered into eternal rest and saw her Saviour and found her beloved Johnny at 10:20 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg, where she had lived for nearly 12 years.
She was born July 12, 1925, in Franklin Township, Snyder County, the daughter of the late William H. and Alda C. (Kratzer) Zechman. On March 28, 1943, she married John Foster Smith, who preceded her in death on March 5, 2002.
When she and her husband first married, they lived on the second floor of the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Frances and John Kleinbauer, in Middleburg, there they spent many Sunday afternoons playing Monopoly with Janet, Martha, Chip and Joe, always ending the evening by making a big pot of french fries.
Vera was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Lewisburg.
She was an avid golfer and a member of the Bucknell Golf Club.
She enjoyed traveling and especially going to Texas to visit her grandchildren.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and RuthAnn Smith, of Campbell, Texas; two daughters, Hope I. Greiner, of Winfield, and Dawn L. Hummel, of Kreamer; 10 grandchildren, David Smith and wife Kathleen, of Hutto, Texas, Becky DeBoer and husband David, of Austin, Ark., Daniel Smith and wife Alice, of Madison Heights, Va., Joy Johnston and husband Rich, of Lynchburg, Va., Amy Mercurio and husband Daniel, of League City, Texas, Gene Greiner and wife Robin, of Perkasie, Martha Stroup and husband Kevin, of Kreamer, John Hummel and wife Melissa, of Kreamer, Rachel Inns and husband Jeffrey, of Sunbury, and Elisabeth Snook and husband Lee, of Millmont; 27 great-great-grandchildren, Nathan, Sarah, Christopher and Joel Smith, Rachel, Benjamin, Samuel and Katie DeBoer, Emilie, Kalyn and Isaac Smith, Andrew Greiner, Abagail, Noah, HannahJoy, Caleb, Joshua and Ruth Stroup, John Calvin, Larissa, Olivia and Isaac Hummel, Emma and Benjamin Inns and Simon, Hannah and Felicity Snook; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Harry and Margaret Buzek Zechman, of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Ethel Zechman, of Baltimore, Md.; nieces; and nephews.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her husband, by seven siblings, Ida M. Zechman, in infancy, Irvin W. Zechman and spouse, Izora E. Miller Zechman, Ernest R. Zechman and spouses, Isabelle Howell Zechman and Rachel E. Walters Bingaman Zechman, Frances M. Zechman Kleinbauer and spouse, John H. Kleinbauer, Kenneth K. Zechman, Wilbert G. Zechman and spouse, Inez T. Hummel, Mary G. Zechman Crouse and spouse, Charles A. Crouse; and one son-in-law, Barry A. Hummel; and one sister-in-law, Mary V. Beachel Zechman
At Vera’s request, there will be no viewing. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St. Middleburg, with Pastor Michael Cantine officiating.
Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, Middleburg.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at RiverWoods and five special aides, Sara, Lettie, Joan, Nicole and Sharon.
