Louie F. Nickey, 97, Milton

MILTON — Louie F. “Dutch” Nickey, 97, formerly of Locust Street and Rockwell Center, Milton, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg.

Born in Milton on April 2, 1915, he was a son of the late Frank and Leah (Savidge) Nickey. He was married on Sept. 6, 1946, to the former Diana Botto, who preceded him in death on Jan. 14, 2006. Her death broke a marital union of almost 60 years.

Louie was a 1933 graduate of Milton High School.

He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard, Troop F, 103rd Cavalry, Lewisburg.

He spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Renovo. During World War II, he served with 190th Field Artillery Group, Battery C, 1st Army, where he participated in D-Day, storming Omaha Beach and earning a bronze Arrowhead. He spent 11 months in combat, also participating in the Battle of the Bulge.

Louie graduated from Williamsport Area Community College in 1948.

He worked at the Sunbury Silk Mill for a year, as a railroad crossing guard in Milton for four years, at Milton Steel Mill for five years and as a machinist at AC&F, Milton, for 31 years before retiring in 1977.

He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Milton, where he was a trustee, a deacon and did outside maintenance.

He was the oldest member of the American Legion in Milton.

Louie was a good family man and enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing and skiing.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce E. and Bruce Baldwin, of Wilmington, N.C., Sylvia J. and Randy Batman, of Milton, and Cindy L. and Gary Muffley, of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Lisa M. Luketich, Travis C. Baldwin, Elissa N. Baldwin, Heather T. Batman, Wendy M. Batman, Curt A. Muffley and Greg J. Muffley; and six great-grandchildren, Richard, Anthony and Matthew Luketich and Ellie, Carly and Kayleigh Muffley.

Louie was preceded in death by one daughter and son-in-law, Judy M. and Richard Millan, and three brothers, Joe F. Nickey, Ralph Nickey Sr. and Albert Nickey.

Friends and relatives will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, 47 Walnut St., Milton, where the funeral will be conducted at 2 with the Rev. Stephen G. Shirk officiating.

Burial with military honors will be in Milton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 47 Walnut St., Milton, PA 17847.

Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, Milton.
