EPHRATA — Annabelle Newberry Shaffer, 85, a former resident of Sunbury, passed away on Feb.21, 2013, at Ephrata Community Hospital surrounded by her family.
She was born in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Margaret (Gingrich) and Stephen Newberry. She was married to Francis Palmer Shaffer who preceded her in death.
Annabelle attended Sunbury High School.
She had worked at the local silk mill and Montgomery Ward for many years. She was also a bookkeeper for the National Biscuit Company.
Annabelle enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles and was an avid Scrabble player. She loved to sew and garden as well as watch movies, especially those featuring John Wayne and Deanna Durbin. She was a fan of big band music. Spending time with her family was important to Annabelle and she delighted in the cruise vacations taken in recent years with her children and grandchildren.
She was a devoted mother to Margaret (Shaffer) Young, of Ephrata and Richard Shaffer, and his wife, Gail, of Riverside; as well as the beloved “Maimie” of Emily and Benjamin Young, of Ephrata and stepgrandmother to Chris Decker, of Richmond and David Decker, of Reston; she is also survived by four brothers, Robert Newberry, Steven Newberry, Clyde Newberry and Stanley Gene Newberry; and two sisters, Mary Clukey and Betty Dodge.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, George, and Richard Newberry; and one sister, Darlene Klinger.
She will be remembered for giving unconditional love and care to family and friends.
A private graveside service will be held on April 6, which would have been her 86th birthday.
