C. Louise Hilliard, 82, Danville

DANVILLE — Clara Louise Hilliard, 82, of 100 N. Ardmoor Ave., Danville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

She was born April 7, 1930, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Roy Allen and Ethel May (Baltzell) Reed.

She was a graduate of Uhrichsville High School and received her bachelor of science degree in religious education at Defiance College in 1952. She earned her master of education degree from Shippensburg University, with a specialty in elementary school counseling.

During her college years, Louise participated in Student Summer Service. Following college she was employed by the Church Federation of Dayton, Ohio, as a teacher of weekday Religious Education.

During her free summers, she was employed by Central PA United Methodist Conference Board of Education as director of Vacation Bible schools for the Preaching-Teaching Mission Program where she met her husband.

Early in her life, Louise became a certified Laboratory School Instructor. She taught in Conference Laboratory schools for Sunday Church School workers and in numerous workshops throughout Central PA Conference for teachers of Sunday Church School, Vacation Bible Schools, and missionary education classes for children.

She was a Sunday Church School teacher for many years and a district officer for the United Methodist Women.

Later, Louise was a teacher in Huntingdon Area School District and an elementary counselor in the Millville Area School District.  She was co-founder of the Jack and Jill Nursery School in Huntingdon, PA.

She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Danville. Louise volunteered time at the Good Samaritan Mission Center, the House of Care, and sang with the Danville Community Singers. She was a member and past president of the Danville Women’s Club.

During retirement, Louise and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States.  They walked on beaches from Maine to Florida and the Gulf Coast. They visited several presidential libraries and museums.

Her favorite place to vacation was North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Louise had a deep appreciation of music and enjoyed walking, cooking, reading, and solving Sudoku puzzles. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, who she loved very much.

She is survived by her husband, of 56 years, the Reverend C. Rayvon Hilliard. They were married Nov. 25, 1955. She is also survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas Rayvon  and Colleen Hilliard of Lancaster, and David R. and Ann Hilliard, of Lewisburg.
