NORTHUMBERLAND — William M. “Bill” White, 75, of Elliott Drive, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 9, 2012, at his home.
He was born Sept. 3, 1937, in Sunbury, a son of the late William and Elizabeth (Snyder) White. On Nov. 17, 1984, he married Shirley (Smith) Lytle who survives.
Bill was a 1955 graduate of Sunbury High School where he excelled at basketball.
Mr. White was very proud of his work on the Pennsylvania Railroad, Lock Haven. He also worked for the city of Sunbury on flood control, was employed as a truck driver for the former Preston Trucking Co., York, operated heavy equipment and was a dump truck driver for Roy Adams.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 503, Sunbury and the Northumberland No. 1 Fire Company.
For many years Bill continued to play basketball and softball and enjoyed watching sports on television, especially the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a collector of trucks, trains and railroad memorabilia. He loved running his model trains and watching movies about the railroad. He enjoyed listening to music and had an affinity for juke boxes. His greatest joy however came from spending time with his family especially the children.
Bill was a big kid at heart. He was a hard worker, but played just as hard. He had something about him that drew people to him. Everyone who knew him loved him. He fought a long, hard battle and the steam in his engine was strong until his last day.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Jeffry Carr, of Selinsgrove; stepson, Eugene Lytle, of Northumberland; five grandchildren and spouses, Justin and Heather Carr, Scott Carr, Matthew Lytle, Sherry and Ryan Petta, and Tara and Robert Davies; six great-grandchildren, Abbigail Carr, Elise and Gavin Petta, Ahlena, Ian, and Chloe Davies; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Sondra Snyder, Dairlene White, and Barbara and Roger Hummel; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Paul and Suann White and Leonard White, all of Sunbury, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Francis “Bucky” White.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with Chaplain James R. Taylor officiating.
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
Contributions in Bill’s memory can be made to SUN Home Hospice, 61 Duke St., Northumberland, PA 17857.
