Betty Strom Melville, 83, Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND  — Betty Strom Melville, 83, formerly of Roslyn, PA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland, where she had lived since August 2005.

She was born Betty Jean Strom on May 7, 1929, in Greenwood, S.C., and was the eldest daughter of the late Thomas E. and the late Lula Ballantine (Smiley) Strom.  Her family moved to Kingstree, S.C. where Betty spent much of her youth. Her sister remembers with fondness how much Betty enjoyed going to Myrtle Beach during her childhood.  

She attended the University of South Carolina.

Betty was employed for more than 30 years at various businesses in administrative and accounting positions.

She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Betty spent much time volunteering at the election polls, her church, the Roslyn Free Library and Meals on Wheels. Betty was elected multiple times to the Board of Commissioners of Abington Township where she served for 16 years.  

She received an award from the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Commissioners for her efforts and devotion during 12 years of service. Betty also received a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for her outstanding community service as a commissioner of Roslyn Ward 15 for four consecutive terms. On Jan. 11, 1996, she was honored with a certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the members of the United States Congress for her outstanding and invaluable service to her community.

She is survived by one son, William B. Melville Jr. and his wife, Diane Grace Melville, of Schwenksville; one daughter, Elizabeth Melville Magill and her husband, John T. Magill III MD, of Lewisburg; five grandchildren, Christopher T. Melville, Daniel S. Melville, Amy Magill Davis, Peter W. Magill and Thomas M. Magill; one grandson-in-law, Thaddeus A. Davis; three great-grandchildren, Anaya C. Davis, Jeremiah C. Davis and Liana M. Davis; one sister, Margaret S. Moody of Greenville, S.C.; and five nieces along with their families.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine S. Brice; a brother-in-law, Boyce S. Brice MD; and a niece, Mary-Jo B. Wittmeier.

A memorial service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Reformed Church of Willow Grove, 1400 N. Hills Ave., Willow Grove.  

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Betty’s memory be made to the Reformed Church of Willow Grove, 1400 N. Hills Ave., Willow Grove, PA 19090, or the Roslyn Free Library, 2412 Avondale Ave., Roslyn, PA 19001.

The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
