PETERSBURG — Marjorie Elaine Hess, 78, of 7423 Hess Lane, passed away at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Altoona Regional Health System. She was a resident of Huntingdon County since 1969 and had lived at her current home since 1990.
She was born Nov. 3, 1934, in New Columbia, the daughter of the late William and Harriet (Reitmeyer) Weidenhamer. On Sept. 4, 1951, in West Milton, she married William Augustus Hess, who preceded her in death.
Marjorie attended Milton High School.
She was first employed in the factory at Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, a division of American Home Products, Milton, then as a teacher’s aide at the Milton Junior High School and later at Josten’s in State College. After moving to Huntingdon County with her husband and family in 1969, she helped to establish and support her husband in his various business endeavors, particularly Mineral Springs Water Co. and Hess Log Homes and Supply, in addition to working for the election board in Logan Township.
Marjorie enjoyed helping to raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, sewing quilts and clothing, reading and doing puzzle books. Her family noted that she was always available to help or offer a hand.
She is survived by four children, David A. Hess and wife Emily, of Alexandria, Linda L. Hess and husband Ray P., of Petersburg, Matthew T. Hess and wife Jody, of New Market, Iowa, and Julie Phillips, of Alexandria; nine grandchildren, Angela Robinson, Eric Kline, Michael Hess, Allison Hall, Thomas Hess, Ethan Hess, Phil Hess, David Phillips and George Phillips IV; and nine great-grandchildren, Kyle Robinson, Zachary Robinson, Connor Robinson, Maya Hall, Braelyn Hall, Isobel Hess, Samuel Kline, Lauren Kline and Jackson Kline.
She was preceded in death by her only brother, Jess “Sonny” Reitmeyer, and her son-in-law, George I. Phillips III.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Cutright Funeral Home-Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria. The funeral and interment will be a private family service.
