BLOOMSBURG — Harvey E. Beck Jr., 82, of Bloomsburg, died on Monday morning, March 18, 2013, a patient at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Harvey was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Sugarloaf Township, a fourth-generation Native American and a son of the late Harvey E. Sr. and Luvera (Eisenhower) Beck.
He completed his education at Millville Area High School. On Dec. 19, 1948, Harvey enlisted in the Army and served his country as a sergeant during the Korean War. During his time of service, he received the Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. On June 3, 1952, Harvey was honorably discharged from his time of dedicated service and returned home to the Bloomsburg area.
Harvey was the former owner and operator of K-Cab Co. in Bloomsburg for more than 13 years. Most recently, he was employed by Bloomsburg University in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1994.
For many years, Harvey was a long-standing member of the former Church of the Nazarene, Bloomsburg. He served as a director of the men’s ministries, taught Caravan, a Christian scouting group, a volunteer of the Northeast Nazarene Camp in Maryland, worked with the Native American Reservation in Arizona with the local Church of the Nazarene, and was head usher and church board member for many years. At the time of his death, Harvey was a member of Crossroads Church of the Nazarene in Montandon and served as coach of the Upward Bound Program.
For many years, Harvey dedicated numerous hours of time assisting and working with other veterans in the area at the Orangeville Manor Personal Care Facility. When time allowed, Harvey loved to hunt, fish and play softball. His friends and family will always remember the times spent playing Rook with Harvey and his love for this particular card game.
On Sept. 3, 1955, Harvey married his beloved wife of 57 years, Eleanor (Long) Beck, of Bloomsburg. Also surviving is a daughter, Carol Beck, of Manchester, Conn.; a son, Steven Beck and wife Nancy, of Marshfield, Mass.; two grandchildren, David and Nathan, of Marshfield; and two brothers, Walter Beck, of Bloomsburg, and Russell Beck, of Catawissa.
Harvey was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Arthur Beck.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday in the Allen Funeral Home Inc., 745 Market St. at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg, followed by the funeral at 2 with the Rev. Marjorie Fisk, of Fairview Mountain Church of the Nazarene, officiating.
Graveside services with full military honors will follow in Creveling Cemetery, Espy.
