SELINSGROVE — Charles E. Basom, 86, of Selinsgrove, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.
Charles was born Nov. 18, 1926, in Snyder County, a son of the late Jay G. and Grace M. (Spangler) Basom. He was married to the former Edith I. “Eddie” Heintzelman who preceded him on June 24, 2008.
He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre and was the personal chauffeur for Major General William Chase. Charles received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Charles retired in 1986 after 40 years of service from Conrail, Enola and the Pennsylvania Railroad, Harrisburg.
He was a member of Zion (Hall’s) Lutheran Church, Port Trevorton, the Dauntless Hook and Ladder Ambulance League, the American Legion Victory Post 25, Selinsgrove, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 6631, Selinsgrove. He also volunteered for the American Red Cross with the annual blood drives.
Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, taking his wife Edith and his children for scenic drives, going to church Bible study, playing guitar and singing with his daughters, and spending precious time with his granddaughters. Charles had a servants heart, always willing to lend a helping hand doing odd jobs.
He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Crystal J. Basom, of Palmyra, and Dawn L. and Tony Gay, of New Holland; two granddaughters, Katey A. Gay and Lindsay R. Gay; one sister, Mary Clayberger, of Selinsgrove; one brother-in-law, Roy Kerstetter, of Port Trevorton; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by three brothers, Nevin Basom and his wife, Dora, Robert Basom, and Donald Basom and his wife, Betty; and three sisters, Lena Coleman, Anita Sipe, and H. Jimella Kerstetter.
Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills, followed by the funeral at 2 with the Rev. Timothy W. Bingman and Pastor Jesse Bingaman, officiating.
Burial with full military rites accorded by the American Legion Victory Post 25, Selinsgrove and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 6631, Selinsgrove will be in the Richfield Union Cemetery, Richfield.
