NORTHUMBERLAND — John W. Yerger, 91, of 1919 Point Township Drive, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Reading, a son of the late James K. and Edna S. (Kline) Yerger. On Sept. 9, 1945, in Milford, he married the former Phyllis Beck McWilliams who preceded him in death in 2005 after 60 years of marriage.
He was a 1939 graduate of Sunbury High School and joined the Army Air Force on Sept. 29, 1942. He was stationed in Corsica and Italy and was a pilot of a B25 “The Paper Doll” and flew 62 missions in the Italian Theater during World War II. John was honorably discharged on Feb. 7, 1944 with the rank of first lieutenant. He received the distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and was a life member of the 57th Bomb Wings Association.
John was self employed in the poultry business for 40 years until his son took over the family business.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post 44, the former VFW Post 8298, both of Northumberland, and a charter and life member of the Point Township Fire Company.
John was an avid bowler and golfer and was a member of the Shade Mountain Golf Course where he played until age 90.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jon S. and Linda Yerger and Dennis J. and Jill Yerger, all of Northumberland; five grandchildren, Denise, Trina, Jon M., and Penn, all of Northumberland, and Justin of Rhode Island; two great-grandchildren, Cory and Graham; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
At John’s request there will be no funeral services.
Arrangements are being handled by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland.
