SELINSGROVE — Charles Ulrich Kreamer, 84, of Selinsgrove, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, in the emergency room at Sunbury Community Hospital.
He was born May 29, 1928, in Selinsgrove, the son of the late Helen E. Ulrich. On July 29, 1950, in Dayton, Ohio, he married the former Joan I. Moenter, who survives. He was a devoted husband for more than 62 years and a loving father to his children and grandchildren.
It will come as a surprise to some who knew him that at the age of 17, he joined and served in the armed forces for more than 23 years, of which 10 years were spent in overseas locations. He rarely mentioned his military service, although he was proud to have served his country. His family was able to accompany him at some overseas locations, such as Guam, Japan and Tripoli, Libya. His service inspired family members to also serve their country. He attended Selinsgrove High School and received his G.E.D. while serving in the military.
After leaving the military, he worked as a correctional officer at the U.S. Penitentiary at Lewisburg. After working 13 years there, he decided to retire so that he and his wife could do what they loved doing and that was traveling in their camper all over the United States. They especially enjoyed the western part of the states. During these travels, they enjoyed visiting the many friends they knew in the military.
Charles also made sure he had time to do things with his children. While they were young, he took them camping, fishing and hunting, which will always be treasured memories. He was a jack-of-all-trades and was there to help all family members and friends when needed. He was a devoted husband, father and loving grandfather and gave unselfishly to all.
He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Selinsgrove. Over the years, he was a special minister of communion, usher, maintenance man and at one time taught fifth-grade religious education.
In addition to his loving wife, Joan, he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Barb Parsons, of Groves, Texas, and Janet and Greg Bettleyon, of Selinsgrove; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary and Georgia Kreamer and Jerome Kreamer, all of Selinsgrove; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son in July 1951.
Friends and family will be received from 11 to noon Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Drive, Selinsgrove, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon with the Rev. Daniel Powell and the Rev. Ted Keating as celebrants.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Selinsgrove.
Contributions to honor Charles may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Drive, Selinsgrove, PA 17870.
Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
