NORTHUMBERLAND — Phillip L. Lockcuff, 75, of Priestley Ave., passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Phil was born March 4, 1937, in Williamsport, a son of the late Fred Lockcuff and Leta (Young) Fulton. On June 27, 1970, he married the former Elizabeth Hine who survives.
He graduated from South Williamsport High School in 1955 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He entered Bloomsburg University in 1956, where he played football, baseball and first became involved with wrestling. He graduated from Bloomsburg State College in 1960. After spending six months in the Army Reserves he began his teaching and coaching career at the then Mahanoy Joint School District (Line Mountain School District). He taught history and coached football and wrestling at Mahanoy Joint from 1962 until 1967. In 1967, Phil came to Shikellamy School District to teach, coach football and to start a junior high wrestling program.
In 1974, he became the varsity wrestling coach at Shikellamy. In his 24 year career as head coach, his teams had a record of 348-74-6, won three state titles in 1984, 1985 and 1991 when he was named PIAA District IV AAA coach of the year. He also mentored 12 state champions, one NCAA champion and three all-Americans.
Mr. Lockcuff was named to the PA Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1995, became a member of the Bloomsburg University Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1995, and also the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998. Phil retired from teaching and coaching in 1998, and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame West Branch Valley Chapter in 2011.
He was a lifetime member of the Northumberland No. 1 Fire Company, Point Township Fire Company and the Americus Fire Company, Sunbury. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 44, Northumberland, Sunbury VFW 1532, Selinsgrove VFW 6631 and the Sunbury Social Club.
He is survived by his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Dawn and Jim Troup, of Northumberland, Russlee and Chris Armstrong, of Haverford and Kerri Lockcuff, of Northumberland; seven grandchildren, Ashlee Goodling, Tyler Inch, Caitlin Moyer, Colin Troup, Richard Armstrong, Daniel Armstrong and Grace Elizabeth Lockcuff-Shambach; one great-granddaughter, Bryce Goodling; one brother, Gary Lockcuff, of Williamsport; one sister-in-law, Russlee Wolfe and husband Samuel, of Northumberland, and his nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 15 S. Fifth St., Sunbury, and again from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday where the funeral service will begin at 11 with the Rev. Richard C. Fangmann officiating.
Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
