FREEBURG — Gary E. Walter, 72, of Freeburg, went home to be with his Lord and Savior and to reunite with his parents and dog, Queenie, on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born Jan. 9, 1941, in Freeburg, a son of the late Harvey A. and Mae E. (Good) Walter. On Sept. 10, 1960, he married the former Ethel K. McCarty who survives. His passing breaks a loving marital union of 52 years.
Gary was a 1958 graduate of Selinsgrove High School.
Early in his employment, Gary worked for Lundy Construction Company, Williamsport, and with Local 542 Operating Engineer Union, Harrisburg, and retired from PP&L, Selinsgrove.
Gary was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Freeburg, where he served on council, and a member of the Freeburg Fire Company. Gary formerly served on the Selinsgrove School Board. He was involved with the Cub Scout program in Freeburg for many years.
In his earlier years he played baseball for Freeburg and enjoyed modified sport car racing. Gary enjoyed hunting, and fishing, and was a fan of all the Philadelphia sports teams. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and outings at the family cabin in Potter County.
In addition to his loving wife, Gary is survived by three children, Tim E. Walter, of Duncannon, Christine L. Horst and husband, Jason, of Lebanon, and Scott A. Walter, of Hummels Wharf; one granddaughter, Courtney Mae Shaffer; one stepgranddaughter, Jessica Horst; and his dog, Max.
Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the funeral at 2, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Church and South Street, Freeburg, with his pastor, the Rev. Timothy W. Bingman, officiating.
Burial will be made in Evergreen Cemetery, Freeburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made in loving memory of Gary to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, c/o Mrs. LJ Hoffman, Financial Secretary, P.O. Box 5, Freeburg, PA 17827.
The George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills have been entrusted with the arrangements.
